1934 Rolls Royce Phantom II “Limousine De Ville” by Gurney Nutting – 7.6 litre<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chassis Number: 55TA \u2013 Engine Number:\u00a0\u00a0 VT55<\/span><\/p>\n

Rolls Royce archives show that Phantom II chassis number 55TA was ordered by Dame Gracie Fields, DBE, through London Rolls Royce dealer H.R. Owen on October 2nd, 1934. The chassis was dispatched to coachbuilder Gurney Nutting on January 10th, 1935, and it took approximately 3 months for the car to be delivered. The vehicle\u2019s history has been validated by Rolls Royce factory and the factory also supplied the original build specification & test sheets, and copy of the archive photo taken prior to delivery. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dame Gracie Fields is a legendary British actress\/singer\/comedienne. On February 15th, 1938, she was honored with the “Commander of the Order of the British Empire” medal from King George VI (link below). Dam Gracie owned the Phantom for only one year, after which it was sold to “His Grace, the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury”. The Duke\u2019s family was the largest private landowner in Europe, holding in excess of 280,000 acres. The car was owned by the Duke’s family from 1936 \u2013 1948, and kept at Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Duke’s uncle had been Chairman of Rolls Royce, and is acknowledged as being the person who commissioned the original “Spirit of Ecstasy” mascot that is today, the very essence of the Rolls Royce marque. His cousin, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, founded the National Motor Museum at his family estate in Hampshire; the Duke\u2019s family tree can be traced here.<\/span><\/p>\n

An enormous quantity of provenance is on hand in relation to this car, including Movietone Newsreel archive video of wedding of Lady Elizabeth Diana Montagu-Douglas-Scott, aunt of the current Duke, to the Duke of Northumberland at Westminster Abbey. The Queen and many other Royals and dignitaries were in attendance for this grand event. Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, and Queen Mary, the Queen Mother, and King George, and the Duchess of Kent. The Duke of Buccleuch is shown getting out of the Rolls with Lady Elizabeth Scott 10th Duchess of Northumberland (his daughter and the bride). These videos show the car numerous times and viewers will note it retains the same number plate today \u2013 BXH 652.<\/p>\n

The Duke sold the car in 1948 to a Rolls Royce hire service at 21 Cromwell Mews, Kensington, UK, where it was used for weddings and other special occasions. It was eventually exported to the US (circa 1970), where it has remained.\u00a0\u00a0 A well-known classic car collector (and lifetime member of the Rolls Royce Owners Club), Gordon Dysart, bought the car and embarked on a restoration returning it to its former glory. At the time, Dam Gracie Fields ran a small hotel and restaurant on Capri Island, catering to celebrities. Mr. Dysart travelled to the island to meet Gracie and seek her assistance on historical elements of the car, which enabled Dysart to obtain the original colours and materials to help add authenticity to the restoration.<\/p>\n
