1991 Ducati 851SP3<\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduced in 1987, the 851 range is regarded as the model that saved Ducati from extinction. Successor to the traditional air-cooled two-valve 900SS, the factory\u2019s technological development had become almost stagnate due to continued funding shortages, but with new investment coming on line after the Cagiva takeover, R&D was significantly improved and Massimo Bordi wasted no time in developing his water-cooled 4-V cylinder heads. Bordi had used the 4-V concept in 1973 for his thesis at the University of Bologna, and with Cagiva funding his updated ideas came into production as the Desmoquattro.<\/p>\n

Based on the Pantah motor but with liquid cooling, fuel injection, and those beautiful desmodromic four valve heads, the 851 made Ducati once again competitive in motorcycle racing. First with the 1987\/8 Tri-colore \u2018Kit\u2019, then 1989 saw the very first SBK homologation SP model, the 851SP; 1990 was the SP2 which introduced the first 888cc engine, which continued with the 1991 851 SP3, 1992 888 SP4, and the final homologation special, the 888 SP5.<\/p>\n

This particular example is a 1991 851 SP3, build number 131. The bike is presented in very original condition save for installation of a far superior Brembo radial front brake master cylinder. It\u2019s not concourse, but it also wouldn\u2019t require much other than elbow-grease to make this a stand-out example of one of the all-time classic Ducati Superbikes of the modern era. This SP3 is in very good condition and travelled very low k\u2019s. Presently with our Italian agent, the advertised price includes shipping and arrival charges into Sydney.<\/p>\n
